The Dangers of Debris Accumulation on Tile Roofs

Tile roofs are designed to provide long-term durability and excellent protection against the elements. However, one of the most common and preventable sources of leaks in tile roofing systems is the accumulation of debris in valleys or behind roof penetrations.

How Debris Causes Roof Leaks
Roof valleys are critical drainage channels designed to direct water safely off the roof. When leaves, twigs, or other debris collect in these valleys, they block the natural flow of water. Instead of draining downward, water can be forced laterally across the roof surface. This creates a dangerous condition where water flows beneath the tiles, bypassing the valley flashing and entering areas never meant to handle moisture.

A similar problem occurs behind roof penetrations such as chimneys, skylights, and vents. Debris trapped in these areas restricts water flow, creating pooling and backup that can easily force water beneath the tiles and underlayment. Once water bypasses these defenses, leaks into the home are almost inevitable.
